How to Use

「てはじめて（て初めて）」は、ある行動をした後で初めて次のことが実現する、または理解できることを表します。

"てはじめて" indicates that something becomes possible or understandable only after a certain action has been completed.

Main Uses

1. Important Realizations / 重要な気づき

  • 「実際に体験してはじめて、その難しさがわかった」(じっさいにたいけんしてはじめて、そのむずかしさがわかった)

  • "Only after experiencing it firsthand did I understand its difficulty"

  • Shows personal growth through direct experience

  • Often used when previous assumptions were different from reality

2. Sequential Achievement / 段階的な達成

  • 「毎日練習してはじめて、上手くなれる」(まいにちれんしゅうしてはじめて、うまくなれる)

  • "Only through daily practice can you improve"

  • Emphasizes the necessary steps for achievement

  • Implies that shortcuts won't work

3. Essential Conditions / 必要条件

  • 「片付けまでできてはじめて、料理ができるといえる」(かたづけまでできてはじめて、りょうりができるといえる)

  • "Only when you can clean up too, can you say you know how to cook"

  • States a prerequisite condition that must be met

  • Implies that without meeting this condition, the claim/result is not valid

Connection

  • 動詞て形 ＋ はじめて (Verb te-form + hajimete)

    Ex. 行って はじめて (itte hajimete) - only after going

  • い形容詞て形 ＋ はじめて (i-adjective te-form + hajimete)

    Ex. 楽しくて はじめて (tanoshikute hajimete) - only when here is enjoyment

  • な形容詞で ＋ はじめて (na-adjective de + hajimete)
