How to Use

「わけがない」は、何かが論理的に「あり得ない」「不可能である」という確信を表現するときに使います。話者の強い否定の気持ちが込められます。

"Wake ga nai" is used to express a strong conviction that something is logically impossible or absolutely cannot be the case.

Main Uses

1. Expressing Logical Impossibility / 論理的な不可能性の表現

  • 「あの人がうそをつくわけがない」(あのひとがうそをつくわけがない)

  • "There's no way he would lie"

  • Used when you have complete trust or confidence in something

  • Based on logical reasoning or deep personal conviction

2. Expressing Incredulity / 信じられない気持ちの表現

  • 「あの店が潰れるわけがない」(あのみせがつぶれるわけがない)

  • "There's no way that shop would go out of business"

  • Shows disbelief towards a situation

  • Often used when something contradicts your understanding of reality

Connection

  • 動詞普通形 + わけがない (Verb plain form + wake ga nai)

    Ex.「起こるわけがない」- There's no way that would happen

  • い形容詞普通形 + わけがない (i-adjective + wake ga nai)

    Ex.「高いわけがない」- There's no way it's expensive

  • な形容詞 + な + わけがない (na-adjective + na + wake ga nai)

    Ex.「簡単なわけがない」- There's no way it's easy

    *Use「な」only in the present affirmative form.

  • 名詞 + の/である + わけがない (Noun + no/dearu + wake ga nai)

    Ex.「先生のわけがない」- There's no way he's a teacher

    You can also use the past tense and negative forms.

    "である" is often used in written language.
