How to Use

「いったら/ことといったら」は、ある物事の程度や状態が極めて印象的で、言葉では言い表せないほどであることを表現する際に使います。話者の強い感動や驚きを伝え、しばしば言葉を末尾で省略することで、その程度の甚だしさを表現します。

"Ittara/koto to ittara" is used when something is so remarkable or impressive that it's difficult to fully express in words. It conveys the speaker's strong emotional response and often trails off at the end to emphasize the extent of the impression.

Main Uses

1. Overwhelming Impressions / 圧倒的な印象

  • 「このレストランの料理の美味しさといったら、もう...」(このレストランのりょうりのおいしさといったら、もう...)

  • "The deliciousness of this restaurant's food is just..."

  • Expresses that something is beyond description

  • Often ends with “、、、” or “。。。” to suggest speechlessness

2. Extreme Situations / 極端な状況

  • 「昨日の渋滞のひどさといったら、信じられないほどだった」(きのうのじゅうたいのひどさといったら、しんじられないほどだった)

  • "Yesterday's traffic jam was just unbelievably terrible"

  • Used to describe extreme situations

  • Emphasizes the extraordinary nature of the experience

3. Strong Emotions / 強い感情

  • 「彼女の怒りようといったら、まるで猛獣のようだった」(かのじょのおこりようといったら、まるでもうじゅうのようだった)

  • "My girlfriend’s anger was just like that of a wild beast"

  • Describes intense emotional states

  • Often followed by a simile or metaphor

  • 名詞 ＋ といったら (Noun + to ittara)

    Ex. この暑さ といったら (このあつさといったら) - this heat is just...

  • い形容詞 ＋ こと ＋ といったら　(i-adjective + koto + to ittara)

    Ex. 楽しいこと といったら (たのしいことといったら)

  • な形容詞 ＋ な ＋ こと ＋ といったら (na-adjective + na + koto + to ittara)

    Ex. きれいなこと といったら (きれいなことといったら)

    *Use「な」only in the present affirmative form.
