How to Use

「うちに」は、主に2つの使い方があります：

1. ある状況や機会、タイミングが続いている間に何かをすることを表現するときに使います。特に「今のうちに」「できるうちに」という、現在の好機を活かしたい気持ちを込めるときによく使われます。

2. また、何かをしている間に、気がつかないうちに状況が変化したことを表現する際にも使います。「遊んでいるうちに暗くなった」のように、予期せぬ変化や時間の経過を表現できます。

"Uchi ni" has two main uses:

1. It is used to express doing something while a certain situation, opportunity, or timing continues. It's often used when you want to take advantage of the current opportunity, especially in phrases like "ima no uchi ni" (while now) or "dekiru uchi ni" (while possible).

2. It can also express gradual or unnoticed changes that occur while doing something else. For example, "playing until it got dark," showing unexpected changes or passage of time.

• 「熱いうちにラーメンを食べよう」(あついうちにラーメンをたべよう)

• "Let's eat ramen while it's still hot"

2. Prevention or Preparation / 予防・準備

• 「忘れないうちにメモしておこう」(わすれないうちにメモしておこう)

• "Let me write it down before I forget"

• Expresses desire to act before an undesirable change occurs

• Often paired with ～ておく to show preparation

• Reflects forward-thinking mindset

3. Gradual or Unnoticed Change / 気づかぬ間の変化

• 「遊んでいるうちに、暗くなった」(あそんでいるうちに、くらくなった)

• "While playing, it got dark" / "It got dark before I knew it while playing"

• Expresses changes that happen gradually or without notice

• Often implies being absorbed in an activity

• Usually describes unintentional or unexpected results

• 動詞普通形 ＋ うちに (Verb plain form + uchi ni)

  Ex. 覚えている うちに (oboeru uchi ni)

• い形容詞 ＋ うちに (i-adjective + uchi ni)

  Ex. 早い うちに (hayai uchi ni)

• な形容詞 ＋ な ＋ うちに (na-adjective + uchi ni)

  Ex. 元気な うちに (genki na uchi ni)

  *Use「な」only in the present affirmative form.
