How to Use

「〜反面、〜」は、ある事柄の良い面・悪い面や、相反する二つの側面を対比して述べる際に使います。英語の "on the other hand" や "while" に似た使い方ですが、より客観的な対比を示す表現です。

"Hanmen" is used to present contrasting aspects or opposing characteristics of a situation, similar to "on the other hand" or "while" in English. It presents a more objective comparison of different sides of the same matter.

Main Uses

1. Contrasting Positive and Negative Aspects / 長所と短所の対比

  • 「この街は物価が高い反面、治安がとてもいいです」(このまちはぶっかがたかいはんめん、ちあんがとてもいいです)

  • "While this city has a high cost of living, it's very safe"

  • Presents balanced view of advantages and disadvantages

  • Often used in analytical or evaluative contexts

2. Describing Dual Effects / 二面性の説明

  • 「父は仕事では厳しい反面、家族にはとても優しいです」(ちちはしごとではきびしいはんめん、かぞくにはとてもやさしいです)

  • "While my father is strict at work, he's very kind to his family"

  • Shows contrasting behaviors, characteristics or situations

  • 動詞普通形 ＋ 反面 (Verb plain form + hanmen)

    Ex. 働く反面 (hataraku hanmen) - while working

  • い形容詞 ＋ 反面 (i-adjective + hanmen)
