How to Use

「とか/だとか」は、不確かな伝聞や曖昧な情報を伝える際に使用します。特に伝聞内容の詳細が不明確な場合によく使われます。

"Toka/datoka" is used to express uncertain hearsay or vague information, especially when the details of the reported information are unclear.

Main Uses

1. Uncertain Hearsay / 不確かな伝聞

  • 「田中さんは体調が悪いとか休むとか言ってました」(たなかさんはたいちょうがわるいとかやすむとかいってました)

  • "I heard something about Tanaka-san being sick and taking time off"

  • Used to convey second-hand information when you're not entirely sure of the details

  • Shows the speaker is distancing themselves from the reliability of the information

2. Uncertain Reasons / 不確実な理由

  • 「残業があるとか言って帰りませんでした」(ざんぎょうがあるとかいってかえりませんでした)

  • "They didn't go home, saying something about overtime work"

  • Used when reporting reasons that you're not fully convinced about

  • Implies some skepticism or uncertainty about the stated reason

Connection

  • 動詞普通形 ＋ とか (Verb plain form + toka)

    Ex. 辞める とか (yameru toka) - something about quitting

  • い形容詞 ＋ とか (i-adjective + toka)

    Ex. 忙しい とか (isogashii toka) - something about being busy

  • な形容詞 ＋ だ ＋ とか (na-adjective + da + toka)

    Ex. 大変だ とか (taihen da toka) - something about having trouble

    *Use「だ」only in the present affirmative form.

  • 名詞 ＋ だ ＋ とか (Noun + da + toka)

    Ex. 病気 だとか (byouki da toka) - something about being sick

    *Use「だ」only in the present affirmative form.

    The negative and past tenses forms can also be used
