How to Use

「だけでなく」は、ある事柄に加えて他の事柄も該当することを表現するときに使います。英語の"not only... but also..."に相当し、物事を付け加えて説明する際によく使われます。

"Dake denaku" is used to indicate that something applies in addition to what was already mentioned. It corresponds to "not only... but also..." in English and is commonly used when adding information or expanding on a point.

Main Uses

1.Adding Information / 情報の追加

  • 「彼女は頭がいいだけでなく、努力家です」(かのじょはあたまがいいだけでなく、どりょくかです)

  • "My girl friend is not only smart but also hardworking"

  • Used when you want to add more information about something or someone

  • Shows that there are multiple aspects or qualities worth mentioning

  • Often used in daily conversation to give a fuller picture of a situation or person

Connection

  • 名詞 ＋ だけでなく (Noun + dake de naku)

    Ex. 東京だけでなく (tokyo dake de naku) - not only Tokyo

  • 動詞普通形 ＋ だけでなく (Verb plain form + dake de naku)

    Ex. 見るだけでなく (miru dake de naku) - not only watching

  • い形容詞普通形 ＋ だけでなく (i-adjective plain form + dake de naku)

    Ex. 高いだけでなく (takai dake de naku)

  • な形容詞普通形 ＋ な ＋ だけでなく (na-adjective plain form + na + dake de naku)

    Ex. 便利なだけでなく (benri na dake de naku)

    *Use「な」only in the present affirmative form.

    Can also use the past tense and negative forms.
