How to Use

「わりに」は、ある基準や期待値と比べて、意外な結果や予想外の状態を表現するときに使います。多くの場合、「～なのに意外と...」というニュアンスが含まれます。「わりには」は対比のニュアンスをより強く表します。

"Wari ni" is used to express that something is unexpected or surprising when compared to a certain standard or expectation. It often carries the nuance of "despite being ~, surprisingly..."　“wari ni wa” expresses a stronger sense of contrast.

Main Uses

1. Surprising Quality or State / 意外な性質や状態

  • 「安いわりに質がいい」(やすいわりにしつがいい)

  • "Good quality despite being cheap"

  • Used to express that something exceeds expectations based on its price, effort, or other input factors.

2. Disproportionate Comparison / 不釣り合いな比較

  • 「見た目のわりに重い」(みためのわりにおもい)

  • "Heavier than it looks"

  • Emphasizes the contrast between expectation based on outward appearance and reality.

Connection

  • 動詞辞書形 ＋ わりに (Verb dictionary form + warini)

    Ex. 食べる わりに (taberu warini) - despite eating

  • い形容詞 ＋ わりに (i-adjective + warini)

    Ex. 高い わりに (takai warini) - despite being expensive

  • な形容詞 ＋ な ＋ わりに (na-adjective + na + warini)

    Ex. 静か な わりに (shizuka na warini) - despite being quiet

    *Use「な」only in the present affirmative form.

  • 名詞 ＋ の ＋ わりに (Noun + no + warini)
