How to Use
「〜ように言う」は、誰かに何かを伝える際の方法や内容を指定するときに使います。特に指示、アドバイスなどを他者に伝える際によく使われます。
"~you ni iu" is used when specifying how or what to tell someone. It's particularly useful when conveying instructions or advice to others through a third party.
Main Uses
1. Giving Instructions / 指示の伝達
「子供たちに静かにするように言いました」(こどもたちにしずかにするようにいいました)
"I told the children to be quiet"
Used when reporting that instructions were given
Carries authority but maintains politeness
Common in situations involving supervision or management
2. Receiving Instructions / 指示を受ける場合
When you are the receiver of instructions or requests, the passive form (〜れる/られる) is commonly used in Japanese.
[Less Natural] 上司は私に報告するように言いました。(じょうしはわたしにほうこくするようにいいました)
"My boss told me to report"
[More Natural] 私は上司に報告するように言われました。(わたしはじょうしにほうこくするようにいわれました)
"I was told by my boss to report"
「〜ように頼む(たのむ)=request」,「〜ように注意する(ちゅういする)=warn」and「〜ように伝える(つたえる)=convey」are also commonly used
Connection
動詞辞書形 ＋ ように言う (Verb dictionary form + you ni iu)
Ex.食べるように言う (taberu you ni iu) - to tell someone to eat
動詞ない形 ＋ ように言う (Verb nai form + you ni iu)
