How to Use

「おかげ」は、誰かや何かのサポートや影響によって良い結果が得られたことを表現するときに使います。感謝の気持ちを込めて使う表現です。

"Okage" is used to express that a positive result was achieved thanks to someone's support or something's influence. It's an expression that conveys gratitude.

Main Uses

1. 人への感謝 / Expressing Gratitude to People

  • 「先生のおかげで合格できました」(せんせいのおかげでごうかくできました)

  • "Thanks to my teacher, I passed"

  • Used to express direct gratitude to someone

  • Commonly used to show appreciation to those who have helped you

2. 物事や状況への感謝 / Gratitude for Things or Situations

  • 「薬のおかげで熱が下がりました」(くすりのおかげでねつがさがりました)

  • “The medicine helped bring my fever down.” "Thanks to the medicine, my fever went down"

  • Expresses gratitude for things or circumstances that led to positive results

  • Used when a natural progression of events leads to a favorable outcome

3. 皮肉な使用 / Ironic Usage

  • 「雨のおかげで予定が台無しになった」(あめのおかげでよていがだいなしになった)

  • "Thanks to the rain, our plans were ruined"

  • Used ironically to point out the cause of negative results

  • Can be used to express complaints or criticism indirectly

  • 名詞 ＋ の ＋ おかげ (Noun + no + okage)

    Ex.努力のおかげ (doryoku no okage) - thanks to the effort

  • 動詞普通形 ＋ おかげ (Verb plain form + okage)

    Ex.頑張ったおかげ (ganbatta okage) - thanks to working hard

  • い形容詞＋ おかげ (i-adjective + okage)

    Ex.忙しいおかげ (isogashii okage) - thanks to being busy

  • な形容詞 ＋ な ＋ おかげ (na-adjective + na + okage)

    Ex.きれいなおかげ (kirei na okage) - thanks to being clean

    *Use「な」only in the present affirmative form.

    The negative, present tense and past tense forms can be used.
