How to Use

「まで」は、極端な例や予想外の事柄を示す際に使用します。英語の"even"に近い意味で、「そこまでするのか」「そこまでのことまで」という驚きや意外性を表現します。

"Made" is used to express extreme examples or unexpected situations. Similar to English "even," it conveys surprise or unexpectedness about the extent of something.

Main Uses

1. Expressing Unexpected Extent / 予想外の程度

  • 「先生まで怒っていた」(せんせいまでおこっていた)

  • "Even the teacher was angry"

  • Shows surprise at the extent of a situation

  • Implies this was beyond normal expectations

2. Emphasizing Thoroughness / 徹底性の強調

  • 「靴下まで濡れてしまった」(くつしたまでぬれてしまった)

  • "I got wet all the way to my socks"

  • Used to emphasize how thorough or complete something is

  • Often carries a nuance of "more than necessary" or "to this extent"

3. Expressing Actions Taken at a Cost / 代償を伴う行動の表現

  • 「休日を返上してまでプロジェクトを完成させた。」(きゅうじつをへんじょうしてまでプロジェクトをかんせいさせた。)

  • "I completed the project even by giving up my holidays."

  • Shows actions taken despite personal, social, or physical costs/sacrifices
